City2Surf 2012

Wooohooo, I did it! I completed the City2Surf, and I ran all the way! I only broke stride very briefly at the top of Heartbreak Hill to grab a cup of water. Heartbreak Hill by the way, I don't see what all the drama is about. It has nothing on the evil hill leading from Roseville Bridge to Forestville.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the experience today! Everywhere along the course were people cheering and playing loud music on their balconies. There were a couple of marching bands, some old dudes with banjos, some guys in smurf outfits, a purple man, and an incredibly festive atmosphere that kept me going all the way to Bondi.

Here are my top tips if you want to train the way I did to run a race:

1) Starting about two months before the race, do some sporadic running.
2) Sign up to a gym, but don't necessarily go training.
3) About three weeks before the race, decide you don't have time for running and stop completely.
4) Pay attention to nutrition. At least three 150g bags of potato chips per weekend leading up to the race should do the trick.
5) Three days before the race, make sure you do as little as possible, watch a lot of television and don't forget those all-important potato chips.
6) Put your runners on and run the race!

That's me (right under the traffic light) coming up to the final stretch along Bondi Beach

Finally past the finish line, and got a medal too!

Time to crack open the bottle of Baileys my colleague promised me upon completion of the City2Surf. Cheers!
