I have now come across two people at work who insist on writing "petition" instead of "partition". They ask me if they can have a petition put up on their desk. I am tempted to ask what they would like me to petition, and if they would like me to address the petition to local, state or federal government. Instead I smile and order them a nice fabric clad desk partition.
We all make mistakes. We all make spelling mistakes. I know I am no exception, but when I do make a spelling mistake it usually does not result in my entire sentence changing its meaning.
And don't even get me started on apostrophes. When did the difference between their, they're and there stop being obvious? And Swedes, how often do we not see possessive apostrophes dotted around in the Swedish language like some sort of disease?
Have people always had such disregard for grammar and spelling rules, or are standards deteriorating?
Unacceptable, I say. Perhaps I should write a petition.
