Spaceship Journey 2012 - Day 2, Victoria's south coast

On day 2 we woke up to a glorious sunny morning at Cape Conran right on the edge of the Bass Straight. Upon returning from a visit to the toilet facilities, I noticed something rather unfortunate. The Cosmic Clown had flat tyre. I have done three long road trips in my life, and had flat tyres on two of them. Statistics are not good. Anyway, I woke Dwayne up and then proceeded to look up a tyre shop in the vicinity. Once we had some breakfast and the spare tyre was on we headed to Orbost Tyre Service in the nearby town of Orbost. Whilst the friendly man at the tyre shop fixed our Spaceship we explored the town. There was nothing particularly noteworthy, except they had a wonderful little tourist information hut with a couple of nice ladies who made sure we left with as many leaflets and brochures as we could possibly carry. The outcome of our visit to the tourist hut was that we decided to turn back to were we were at Cape Conran and try out the walking trails around the coast.

After picking up the car (and tipping the mechanic handsomely because it was so fantastically cheap) we drove back to the coast and spent a couple of hours walking along the shore line, ooh-ing and aah-ing at all the interesting things on the beach. We found millions of pretty sea shells, lovely pebbles, fluffy sea sponges, and shark egg cases.

After having lunch at the beach we headed west along the coast, via Lakes Entrances and a detour through the beautiful countryside (green with lots of dairy farms) to a camping ground in Swan Reach along the Princes Highway. There is not much to say about the place as such, but the camp ground was great with lovely hot showers and a great barbecue spot under a lemon tree. We had BBQ for dinner with a couple of beers and decided it had been a good day, flat tyre and all.
