Kuranda itself is a nice little village with a lot of shops and a market to entertain tourists. We had planned to do some shopping and perhaps see the butterfly exhibition. But as we were browsing through the shops I got a text message from Jetstar (the airline). It said something like: "Your flight is cancelled. You're flying tomorrow instead. Have a great day!". Well, perhaps not exactly those words, but the contents of the message was just that. No more, no less. And more importantly, no explanation. So instead of happy shopping we ended up in an internet cafe trying to find another flight home that afternoon. It proved impossible, so instead we had to contact the hotel to secure another night's stay.
Feeling confused and a bit stressed, instead of shopping we went for a beer and contemplated our situation. We came to the conclusion that there was not much we could do, and another day in paradise isn't that bad after all. After having sent the necessary emails and messages we decided to catch the cable cars back down, head to the hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon in the hotel pool.
Well. Once at the Skyride station it turned out they had been hit by lightning the evening before (same storm that we were driving through, I presume) and they were out of service. Instead we were packed into buses and shuttled down the hill to the station at the other end. Not quite the memorable journey we had hoped for. It seems we were clearly not meant to travel above ground on that day.
But as planned, once we got home we spent the rest of the day in the pool and on sun lounges next to the pool, finishing with a final dinner by the beach.
