Yesterday afternoon after a long and lovely day spent on the northern beaches, I found myself sitting on the grass near Dee Why beach watching people soak up the last of the Christmas holiday sun. Sounds like a perfect moment, don’t you think? Yes – it very much was until a group of hooligans with a microphone and an amplifier appeared in front of me.
They were in their early twenties, looked like surfer dudes. Casual beach wear, a bit of muscle. I had no idea what they might be about to say, when Dwayne alarmingly pointed out a bible that they had put down in front of the amplifier.
The first dude got up, grabbed the microphone and started his orating with the following statement (in an unnecessarily loud voice – he did have an amplifier after all):
“There are people who will tell you we were once fish with gills, that we evolved into mammals and then apes! THESE ARE ALL LIES!”
Oh my. Time to go home.
