She has a new iPhone since a couple of months back, latest model, brand new and expensive. Hence, she is very protective of it. My greasy, fingerprinty, dusty, grubby phone was not even allowed to spend time in the same handbag pocket as hers. Apparently it's a bad influence.
Strangely however, she refuses to put any type of screen protector on the phone, so a lot of her time is taken up making sure no keys or coins (or my grubby phone) or anything else that could scratch it is anywhere near it.
I found myself thinking that this is a jinx if I ever saw one. All that nervous energy around the phone, it can only end badly.
And as I suspected, on the very last day of holiday, the phone met with the tiled floor in a most unfortunate fashion, and the screen was no more.
Meanwhile, my highly neglected but screen protected phone has numerous accidents (including at the hands of a three-year-old) each week and is in top condition underneath the dirt.
I feel there is a lesson to be learnt here somewhere.
