Today was Melbourne Cup day. Horse racing all the way! The Aussies are all obsessed with this event, and I was in charge of sweepstakes at work. I managed to sell a few hundred dollars worth of tickets, and the whole procedure took all day. I didn't get anything else done! But it was worth it even though I didn't win a cent, not even money back for last place, because it was good fun. At 3pm we all gathered in a meeting room to watch the race, which was made more interesting due to a bad internet connection... Sometimes the horses galloped and sometimes they froze in mid-stride, but it all added to the excitement. The finish was incredible - apparently the closest ever in 151 years! It was nearly impossible to tell who won, even looking at the finish line photo.
Next year I am going to suggest dressing up. Hats perhaps, make a proper race day of it.
